PokeBonk lag: fix low FPS, maintenance and drops

Updated

Play PokeBonk now

There are three places to look for PokeBonk lag: your device drawing more than it can handle, the connection or server struggling, or an old version of the game still open after an update. Start by turning on Show FPS in Settings, Graphics. It puts the frame rate and the number of enemies on screen, so you can tell straight away whether the problem is your computer or the network. Every fix below comes from the game’s own settings and messages.

Is it PokeBonk lag or a server problem?

Match what you see to the cause:

What you see Likely cause What to do
Low fps, stutter when the screen fills up Your device is drawing too much Graphics settings below
Pokémon shown as Poké Balls, or empty icons Graphics still downloading Settings, Graphics, Reload graphics
“Under maintenance” card Server maintenance Wait; it checks every 30 seconds and reloads by itself
“The server is very busy” Too many players at once Try again in a few seconds
“No connection” or an offline-run warning Your network Fix the connection before a run that should count
“There is a new version of PokéBonk” banner An update is out Press Reload between runs
“The picture was lost” Your graphics card restarted Continue without graphics, or Reload (the run is saved)

If Show FPS reads high but you still feel PokeBonk lag, the network is the more likely cause. If the fps number falls as the enemy count climbs, your PokeBonk lag is rendering.

Fix PokeBonk lag on PC: graphics settings to try first

Change one setting at a time and watch how the PokeBonk lag changes.

  1. Show FPS. Turn it on first. It shows frames per second and how many enemies are on screen.
  2. Hide my attacks. Your own projectiles and their effects are no longer drawn. The game calls it a big fps gain with lots of attacks, and enemy attacks still show.
  3. Pickup effects: Simple. No trails or sparkles when you pick up candies and coins, which helps when the ground is covered in them.
  4. Quality: Low. The game’s own note says Low performs better. Try Medium first if you want to keep some detail.
  5. Battery saver. Caps the game at 30 fps and lowers the resolution. It is meant for phones, but it also helps on a weaker computer.

In gameplay videos from October 2026, players linked their frame drops to enemies piling up on screen. That is why Show FPS counts enemies, and why a build that keeps the horde thin can also mean less PokeBonk lag.

Hardware acceleration: a hidden cause of PokeBonk lag

If your browser is not using your graphics card, you get heavy PokeBonk lag: the game runs at very few fps even on a good computer. The game detects this, shows a warning and switches the quality to Low once while you fix it. The game’s own fix for Chrome, Edge or Opera:

  1. Open your browser’s Settings, then System.
  2. Turn on “Use hardware acceleration when available”.
  3. Restart the browser.
  4. If it was already on, update your graphics card drivers.

If the screen goes dark mid-run with “The picture was lost”, your graphics card restarted. The game waits for it and offers two buttons: Continue without graphics (you keep playing with the minimap) or Reload. Reloading ends the run and saves it with everything you earned.

When the server causes PokeBonk lag

Some PokeBonk lag is not on your side at all:

  • Maintenance. The game shows an Under maintenance card. It checks the server every 30 seconds and reloads the page by itself as soon as maintenance is over, so you can leave the tab open. A Check now button tries straight away.
  • Busy server. “The server is very busy. Try again in a few seconds.”
  • Slow connection before a run. If you start now, Pokémon that have not downloaded yet will look like Poké Balls until they arrive.
  • Connection lost during a run. Your run is saved on your device and sent automatically once you are back online, even if you close the game. Patch 0.5.7 added this, shinies included.
  • No server at the start. If a run cannot be started on the server and you play offline, it will not count toward your progress, quests or rankings.

Patch 0.8.18 (October 22, 2026) also changed server updates so they no longer cut your connection; you can keep playing while they are applied.

PokeBonk lag after an update: reload the page

An old version left open can cause PokeBonk lag and odd behaviour. The game checks for a new version every 5 minutes and whenever you come back to the tab. When one is out, a banner says “There is a new version of PokéBonk” with Reload and Later buttons. It only appears outside a run, so it will not interrupt a fight. Press Reload. The version number sits under the logo; tap it to read what changed, or see our update notes. Since patch 0.8.11, a blank screen after an update recovers by itself, so Ctrl+F5 is no longer needed.

Still seeing PokeBonk lag? Report it

If the PokeBonk lag stays, use the game’s report form. It can attach your browser, the game version, your run (Pokémon, zone, time and FPS) and recent errors, which is what the developer needs. Reports need a connection to the server; if you cannot reach it, the game points you to its Discord. For phone settings, see our mobile guide. If your own effects cause the PokeBonk lag, a lighter build from our builds page can help, and the controls guide explains the settings tabs.

Frequently asked questions

What causes PokeBonk lag?

Look in three places for PokeBonk lag: your device is drawing too much (low FPS), the connection or server is struggling, or an old version is still open after an update. Turn on Show FPS first. If the frame rate is low, use Hide my attacks, Simple pickup effects and Low quality. If you see a server message, follow it.

Is PokeBonk down, or is it just my connection?

We cannot see the server from here. During maintenance the game shows an Under maintenance screen that checks again every 30 seconds and reloads the page by itself when maintenance ends. If it says the server is very busy, try again in a few seconds.

Will I lose my run if my connection drops?

Usually not. If the connection fails, the game keeps the run on your device and sends it automatically when you are back online, even if you close the game. A run that could not start on the server at all is different: played offline, it will not count toward progress, quests or rankings.

Can an old version cause PokeBonk lag?

Yes, an old version left open can, so reload the page. The game checks for a new version every 5 minutes and shows a banner with a Reload button when you are not in a run.

Is PokeBonk lag worse on phones?

On a lower-powered phone it can be, so turn on Battery saver, which caps the game at 30 fps and lowers the resolution. Our mobile guide covers the touch settings.
